Introduction to the Workbook for Students

Introduction to the Workbook for Students
with Revs. Deb & Paul Phelps

Our teaching will encompass the Introduction to the Workbook. It is time to come to the lessons with no preconceived notions, that means whether we have practiced the lessons before or not. Be open, be willing and know that the purpose of the Workbook is to train your mind in a systematic way to a different perception of everyone and everything in the world.

Prayer of the Heart for 8/2/16

The answer resides within any perceived problem. Am I willing to step away from the belief it cannot be solved and realize it already has been solved. Just a change of perception is all it takes. Thank You Spirit.

Each day for our Healing Circle, we offer up Prayers of the Heart. You can share your prayers with us on our email group. We take your prayer dedications and will incorporate into one of our daily prayers!

Join us for our Healing Circle as we open to living in Prayer, Forgiveness and Healing.

Thoughts on Lesson 45

Lesson 45 – God is the Mind with which I think.

WBNewsletterThis lesson we are discovering our real thoughts. Our real thoughts are with God. I know personally I don’t like the thoughts I come up with sometimes. A slight judgment, a remembrance of a mistake from the past, and so on it goes, yet these are not the thoughts God would have us have.

I like the link in Text, Ch. 4, IV. This Need Not Be – Think honestly what you have thought that God would not have thought, and what you have not thought that God would have you think.  What am I thinking about myself or another that is not what God would think? Is it blame, judgment or a faulty perception? God would think only loving thoughts and with this I can focus my attention. The practice leads me to my real thoughts with God.

Thoughts on Week 5 – Text – Chapter 3, Section III. Perception versus Knowledge

Chapter 3, Section III. Perception versus Knowledge

I want to know God, Holy Spirit. I want to have no doubt within my holy mind. I know that I must doubt because I still have the experience of this body and this room, this world around me.

Here in this section, I am being told of knowledge and perception. Knowledge is solid, and nothing can shake its foundation. That is the certainty.

Perception leaves an opening. I had made a choice to see otherwise, and now I am choosing the right perception. Yet, there is still that possible thread that I may follow and question truth.

Attack keeps the barrier between the knowledge and my mind. Even in my daily walk with my brothers, I may choose even so subtly to attack, thus placing the doubt and uncertainty in mind. My task is to stand strong and see no other direction and to know that there is no other direction possible for me to take.

This helps to reinforce for me the lesson I have had for some time which is strengthening my stance in truth. The strong the stance, the more confident I am. The more confident, the more certainty, thus it is leading me to absolute knowledge.

Thoughts on Lesson 6

Lesson 6
I see something that is not there.
I’ve made up my mind what there is to see. My interpretation stands in the way of peace of mind. As I practice, it doesn’t matter what “it” is for “it” is disturbing my mind. I let go and trust that I will learn how to withdraw my perception and see anew.

Thoughts on Text – Week 1 – Preface

You may be surprised that we start with the Preface of ACIM instead of getting right into the meat of the Text. It was something I was guided on many years ago to do. Sometimes we forget these small things as a “preface” because we feel we cannot gain from it. But not so true. We can gain so much from everything around us, if only we are to look. So look with your eyes wide open! I know I have closed my eyes when I thought I knew all the answers, but I realize it is rather wisdom that tells me I do not. So I come to this study with all of you, yes with years of experience, but with new eyes.

I’ll be including new writings with old writings I have done on the Text.

My writings from the past on this….

Preface – How It Came

I like to start with the Preface because I know that most times when I have read a book in the past, I have ignored an Introduction, a Forward, or a Preface. Here in the Preface I can learn a great deal, if I am open to it.

Miracles begin with a decision to share a common goal. Whether it is with ACIM here as it states with Helen and Bill or myself when I join with the Holy Spirit. Miracles can and will take place when I provide the little willingness. That’s what Helen and Bill’s story is about. The little willingness and out it grew.

“There must be another way.”

When I come to the place where I cannot take it anymore, then I surrender and I look beyond how I think I should fix the problem. I am open to something totally new and not the way I had handled it before.

Preface – What It Is

The Course as my curriculum is so perfect and systematic in its way of teaching. My misguided mind will let go of all that I have learned from my false teacher. This occurs when I allow the training from the Course to occur.

For the training to succeed, I come with complete openness, a little willingness and a determination to heal. That is all that is required. I do not have to understand anything but be ready to practice, ready to accept Holy Spirit’s meaning.

As with any curriculum or course of study, eventually, one reaches a point of completion and travels into the world being guided by the Knowledge and Understanding that is acquired. I am left in the Hands of my Internal Teacher, fully capable of teaching me further in my “post-graduate” studies.

As the Course states, “Forget this world, forget this course and come with wholly empty hands unto your God.”

I am in the Hands of Him Who knows me so perfectly, Who knows that I am perfection itself. And so, Holy Spirit, I place my trust in You. The Course is a teaching device. It is set up for study and application. I can study how I feel guided, but if I am to understand the theory, then I must practice it.

I affirm I will be open to Its teachings. As the quote from the Workbook states, I may find the ideas hard to believe or startling. I am supposed just to apply the ideas, very simply. Let go of my wanting to know the answers and what it all means and just do it. By “doing it” I am letting down my guard, letting down the walls and allowing God’s Loving Hand to come in and let the Answer to be written for me.

Finally, when it is all said and done, I am to allow the Holy Spirit to guide and direct me. I have to come to trust that He will lead.

Preface – What It Says

The Course begins with the distinction of real and unreal. What more could I need after that? Wouldn’t those words be simple enough? But because my ego is too wrapped up in itself, I have to be taught very carefully. I have to come to understand what is knowledge and what is perception. I learn about truth being everything God created and perception everything else and made of my ego mind.

I made it all up in my mind, but that does not mean that I am alone. God gave me the Holy Spirit to assist me in escaping from this world that I have made. All of its darkness and fog used to obscure the Light, His is the task of leading me out and into God’s Arms.

The world that I see around me reflects the guilt and pain and every other similar belief I have held since the separation from God. In truth, we could not be separated but we made a barrier in our mind, hiding from God. As we practice what Jesus puts forth in this Course, little by little that barrier is released.

The barrier is released by miracles, those shifts in perception from the fear to the love. The barrier is let down by forgiveness and seeing through the Eyes of Christ. All of these take me out of the body and into the realm of God.

Forgiveness is the key, and that will be acknowledged many times. Forgiveness is not needed in Heaven, but it is needed here. Forgiveness helps us to remember just a little bit more each time I practice it. Forgiveness reverses everything that was made.

In the end, God Himself takes the final step.

“Truth is unalterable, eternal and unambiguous.”

“The world of perception, on the other hand, is the world of time, of change, of beginnings and endings.”

Which perception that I choose is up to me, it is my decision. Do I accept the truth? Or do I accept the false? I cannot accept both. In the joining, I am learning to relinquish the false and accept what is true more and more. The false falls away layer upon layer as the light cracks through its dusty facade.

The Holy Spirit is my way out, my Answer in Whom I can place all my trust. He is Heaven-Sent to assist me in reversing my thinking. I do not have to do it alone and rely on my strength. I have Him to show me the illusions, to gently remind me to forgive, and to see that Love is greater than fear for fear does not even exist.

Many ideas I have learned upon this journey of my life and will learn even deeper still. I come to know the true union with God and with my brothers by seeing only the Christ. I do not use relationships to divide and separate still to claim what I can get but instead allow them to be used to show me myself. Relationships are the mirror. What reflection shall I choose to see today?

Through the illusion of forgiveness, for Heaven needs it not, I come to correct my error of thinking about my brothers and myself. My Companion helps me to see that this world is just a hologram, a projected image that hides the truth.

Gratefulness for the truth is deep within my heart as I now have another way to see and experience the world. It brings me Home, Home to where I belong eternally.

Prayer of the Heart

Rev. Deb shares the connection that honesty and authenticity has for our “prayer of the heart.” We must be consistent and in alignment with our prayer. We also realize prayer is beyond our needs in the world as our only true prayer is one of gratitude. As it says in ACIM, “It is impossible that the prayer of the heart remain unanswered in the perception of the one who asks.”

From Darkness to Light, Pt. 5

We conclude this week’s reading with paragraphs 7 and 8 of Chapter 11, Section III. From Darkness to Light.

T-11.III.7.             Only God’s Comforter can comfort you. 2 In the quiet of His temple, He waits to give you the peace that is yours. 3 Give His peace, that you may enter the temple and find it waiting for you. 4 But be holy in the Presence of God, or you will not know that you are there. 5 For what is unlike God cannot enter His Mind, because it was not His Thought and therefore does not belong to Him. 6 And your mind must be as pure as His, if you would know what belongs to you. 7 Guard carefully His temple, for He Himself dwells there and abides in peace. 8 You cannot enter God’s Presence with the dark companions beside you, but you also cannot enter alone. 9 All your brothers must enter with you, for until you have accepted them [you] cannot enter. 10 For you cannot understand wholeness unless you are whole, and no part of the Son can be excluded if he would know the Wholeness of his Father.

T-11.III.8.             In your mind you can accept the whole Sonship and bless it with the light your Father gave it. 2 Then you will be worthy to dwell in the temple with Him, because it is your will not to be alone. 3 God blessed His Son forever. 4 If you will bless him in time, you will be in eternity. 5 Time cannot separate you from God if you use it on behalf of the eternal.

I cannot comfort myself, certainly now that is quite obvious. In the silence is only where I will find peace. I spoke the power of silence during my radio show on Thursday (12/19/13-see link) As I embrace peace, peace embraces me. My mind is as pure as it was created. I only allowed dark thoughts to soil me but in truth I can never be soiled, it only seems that way from my skewed perception.

As my perception becomes clear, I realize I need my brothers to enter into Heaven. Every horrid thought, every unspoken resentment and every cold shoulder I have held towards another needs to be relinquished if the light of joy is to be experienced. I do want to experience joy, so I enter within the silent temple in my mind and join with my Guide, the Comforter, the Friend, the Divine Presence that God gifted me to release the heavy chains of judgment. What relief when I accept the gift. A gift indeed to recognize this holiday season and every day.

Next week’s reading is Workbook for Students, Lesson 157 – Into His Presence would I enter now.

Session 2: Meditation of the Bubble

Session 2

Video on YouTube is a private video but you will still be able to see it as I shared it here.

Practicing meditation everyday for at least 10-15 minutes a day can make a big difference in your life. Meditation helps you to de-stress and to relax. It is a mini-vacation for the mind.

How can I avoid being distracted by how much time has gone by?

Sometimes we tend to keep peeking at the clock. A watched pot never boils, they say, nor does it make for a fruitful meditation. Today there are many timers available to use for meditation, including those for your iPhone or Android phones and tablets. Just be sure to switch the phone into airplane mode so a call doesn’t disrupt your meditation. You can easily set the timer for 10 minutes and off you go on your meditation journey. The gentle chimes will bring you back to the external world.

Last session we followed our breaths to the count of 4. This session we will be doing a structured meditation of observation in a unique way.

  • Sit with your back comfortably straight, your head and neck aligned with the spine as much as possible.
  • Gently close your eyes.
  • You will be observing your own consciousness in a special way.
  • Try not to interfere with the process.
  • You will be meditating on the stream of your consciousness.
  • Start by picturing yourself sitting quietly and comfortably on the bottom of a clear lake.
  • You probably are familiar with watching bubbles slowly rise to the surface of the water. This is similar to what you will be doing in this meditation.
  • Each thought, feeling, perception, etc. will be a bubble rising to the surface.
  • It will move into the space and then out of the space in your mind.
  • It will take about 5-7 seconds for each thought process.
  • When you have a thought or feeling, simply observe it for this time period until it passes out of your visual space.
  • Then wait for the next one, observe it, let it pass and so on.
  • Remember, you are not exploring the thoughts, you are just observing the thoughts.
  • Do not explore, follow up or associate to another bubble. Just observe it in the background by saying something like, “Oh, that’s what I’m thinking (feeling, sensing, etc.) now. How interesting.”
  • As it passes you calmly wait for the next bubble.
  • Don’t be thrown off if the same bubble arises a couple of times. Just go on.
  • Do not look for connections or the source of your thoughts.
  • If your mind goes blank, then being blank can be another bubble.
  • The purpose of the concept of bubbles rising through the water is to help you to do two things:
    • Timing. You learn to contemplate each thought or perception for approximately a definite time and then to let it go.
    • The structure helps you look at each one individually and not constantly feel that you must find connections between them.
  • If you find the idea of bubbles hard to picture, you can imagine yourself sitting in a field and watching clouds or watching logs float down a stream. Whatever feels comfortable to you.
  • Try a few different visualizations, but then settle on one to use as you practice over the next week.
  • Try to practice at least 10 minutes a day.

Be sure to share on the Email Forum any questions that you may have. You can also share your experiences.
