Thoughts on Week 22, Text, Ch. 13, VI. Finding the Present

Ch. 13, VI. Finding the Present

I must perceive everyone as they are in the shining NOW moment. I never see anyone truly as I have attached the past to my vision, good or bad, but mostly my negative interpretation.

Yet somehow I think this is natural, to recall to memory the catalog of sins when I meet someone again. This isn’t natural, as Jesus tells me it is delusional. Forever would I keep my brothers in chains, especially those who I perceived have wronged me. Yet, I am in chains as well.

I keep focused on the shadows of the past because I am afraid of what the present light could show me. My brothers is not in shadows. It is my mind that is.

I choose the miracle to envision my brother in the light of which he truly stands forever in truth, forever free.

Thoughts on Week 22, Text, Ch.13, III. The Fear of Redemption

Ch. 13, III. The Fear of Redemption

We are afraid of love. We do everything in our power to keep ourselves away from love. Yet no matter how many times I do that myself, underneath it all is the memory of God. Love is there. It cannot be cast aside but it can be covered up.

It is insane that quickly I can say “I hate” rather than “I love”. The more I focus on the hatred and fear the more love is covered up. This happens oh so innocently. “Oh, I hate when ____ happens,” or “I can’t stand so and so.”

I have to look at my illusions, let them rise to the surface. This hidden hatred is what keeps love from my consciousness. I believe I am crucified when instead I am redeemed. And, I was never crucified in the first place. My attraction to punishment for desiring specialness has been the driving force.

Beneath it all love awaits to save me. The answer? Holy Spirit’s vision is merciful and His remedy is quick. As it says: Do not hide suffering from His sight, but bring it gladly to Him. Lay before His eternal sanity all your hurt, and let Him heal you. Do not leave any spot of pain hidden from His light, and search your mind carefully for any thoughts you may fear to uncover. For He will heal every little thought you have kept to hurt you and cleanse it of its littleness, restoring it to the magnitude of God.

It is worth the time to take to offer my illusions to Him. I am worthy of doing so. I am loved.

Look Calmly

There are always those people or situations in our lives that seem to trigger a chaotic response. You know of which I speak, right? That one person or that one memory that sets you off the deep end and into panic, anger and upset. It’s as if you are driving 0-100 in a millisecond. You know you don’t want to be quick to attack or defend, but you do, then you regret it and feel guilty.

I, too, know of this because I have experienced it in my life. The Course is here with us as a tool to assist us to use its principles in every aspect of our lives. Recently I had an experience with a family member where it could have been as I described earlier, however, I am noticing more and more how easily I can slip into the Spirit’s glove instead of the ego’s web.

What I noticed is I set an intention before the conversation occurred. I wanted to give the conversation to the Holy Spirit, no matter how much my ego protested. It was a conscious decision. I was aware at every moment consciously what decision I was going to make, i.e. what I would say or what I would do. It was as if the conversation was happening in slow motion and perhaps it was because I would frequently stop and gather myself, closing my eyes for a moment to tune into my experience. Was I present? Or, was I being disturbed by the past? This person was dredging up the past, incident after incident, unaware of how it has affected their self-esteem and self-confidence. There were stuck in the past, but I need not be.

I needn’t accept the platter of guilt being handed to me. I can politely pass on the offering. Just because it is presented to me, I do not have to accept it. There may have been some actions I need to take responsibility or admit a mistake, however, I do not need to continue to admit it every time it is brought to me on the platter. When someone is upset, they need to simply be heard. I found by withdrawing any defense on my part helped the situation along until it came to a calm conclusion.

If I am grounded in my truth, do I need to defend? No. It was merely a means for this person who feels so out of control to try to control the situation. I care about this person and I love this person. Yet, I do not have to accept the guilt in the form of verbal or emotional abuse. Jesus does not ask us to suffer. We can be aware, make amends if needed, and do what we need to do. Mostly we are to respond to calls for love with love. That does not mean to attack back.

We do not have to live our lives in a whirlwind of chaos, rapidly traveling from one self-induced crisis to another, nor do we have to make our lives a soap opera or drama. I’ve been there. I know. I don’t desire it anymore. I desire peace. While in this recent situation, I simply looked calmly upon it, with no judgment (no matter what popped up from the ego) holding only the sacred space. It takes practice and patience and vigilance to be at this point. It is only as difficult as we believe it to be. We do not allow ourselves to be abused and we set healthy boundaries of course here in the world of form. Yet, we can do this with calmness in our heart. We can have peace in the midst of chaos. It is really up to us to choose. Be willing, be aware, be mindful, be vigilant and just, be.

Thoughts on Week 7 – Text – Chapter 4, VII. Creation and Communication

Chapter 4, VII. Creation and Communication

ACIMTxtI recall several years ago as Paul and I meditated together, we shared out loud what conversations, images, thoughts or feelings we were receiving from Holy Spirit. We had received some time ago inspiration on a project that we were to do. It still has not been fully realized as we saw in our meditation. In it, we saw that there were still some unworthiness issues. As Holy Spirit continued to speak with us it turned around and we felt that we were coming into our own, the clouds around us were falling away.

I asked Him, “How are we going to do this?” and He spoke to me so assuredly, “You will not because I will. I have given you a gift and you can not but share it with your brothers. If you hold on tightly it will not go anywhere, yet its purpose is to be shared and you will see it peel away from your fingers. Share in confidence. The skyscraper is about completed. It is not the Tower of Babel but the Tower of Truth. On this foundation, reach out to your brothers for they are lonely with you.”

We then directed our attention back to the Course since we were reading just this section. What joy we ourselves felt when we read the following.

How can you teach someone the value of something he has deliberately thrown away? He must have thrown it away because he did not value it. You can only show him how miserable he is without it, and slowly bring it nearer so he can learn how his misery lessens as he approaches it. This teaches him to associate his misery with its absence, and the opposite of misery with its presence. It gradually becomes desirable as he changes his mind about its worth. I am teaching you to associate misery with the ego and joy with the spirit. You have taught yourself the opposite. You are still free to choose, but can you really want the rewards of the ego in the presence of the rewards of God?

…..As you come closer to a brother you approach me, and as you withdraw from him I become distant to you. Salvation is a collaborative venture. It cannot be undertaken successfully by those who disengage themselves from the Sonship, because they are disengaging themselves from me. God will come to you only as you will give Him to your brothers. Learn first of them and you will be ready to hear God. That is because the function of love is one.

It was confirmation of our messages from not only this moment but all the inspiration and that had occurred for some time. So in time it had formulated, the foundation was set, the floor and the walls built. Not too long after it was time to complete the decoration and unveil it, which at that time we did. We were happy in this knowledge, and I am happy as I review this memory.

Let it be free. Let the joy be shared to your brothers. You are here only to be truly helpful.

Multitude of Problems Resolved

This post was originally written in May 2015 in regards to a class titled “Take a Vacation from the Ego” based on the movie, “What About Bob?”

Last Thursday our class began its journey and the title is “Take a Vacation from the Ego.” We are using the movie “What About Bob?” (classic comedy with Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss) to lead our study and discussion. This post is in relation to one of our homework assignments which was a reading from the Text, Ch. 26, II. Many Forms; One Correction.

Holy Spirit sees all of our problems as the same, yet we see them all as different. Our hero Bob had a multitude of problems, fears and phobias. We can assume that he had been through one therapist after another, perhaps clinging to that therapist as his answer.

Here comes Dr. Marvin, was he the first person to be so bold and brash with him to tell him that the best therapist is the one inside his very mind? We don’t know for certain. But we saw a mini-transformation occur. Had the other therapies worked would he have still been terrified to ride the elevator? We can only speculate of course. For me, I think Dr. Marvin hit a nerve. When the student is ready the teacher appears and here they were both student and teacher to one another.

The Holy Spirit is within us and He offers us the gift of release from every problem we may think we have. Each are one as stated before. We think there is an hierarchy of problems. Not true, Jesus tells us here in this section. One is not greater or less than another. And why is that so? There was only one mistake. Our own perception makes them one greater than another. That’s what this world is about. It keeps us guessing and analyzing and in a tailspin. “If I could just solve this problem in front of me, I would be happy.” No dice because here in the world there will always be another problem to take its place.

God’s justice shows us that it is solved already. We can rest in God if we so choose. The question to ask is “Am I willing to receive the answer to all of my problems?” It won’t be found in a Dr. Marvin, a person, place or thing of this world. It will be found in God. I have to be willing to “drop it” just like a dog with a bone or other item, we tell the dog to drop it, but we sure like to hang on fast to that bone.

In surrendering, we realize we are really surrendering the pain that we can control the problem and thus the solution. Each time I practice releasing my “problem” and I receive the gift of peace it shows me the path of light Home.

Sometime we think that more money will solve the problem, more education, more knowledge of some sort, more understanding of the situation or the person, better surroundings, a new “fill in the blank” including relationship, but none of those worldly solutions will bring us lasting happiness. The happiness comes when we let go of the worldly solutions and accept His solution instead.

We can remember God. We can remember Who we really are. Do we want to? You want to when you drop everything else and accept the memory of Him within. It’s not that we won’t care about what happens to ourselves or others in the world. We will now walk with a sense of trust, confidence and peace as we walk this world. We will know and know for sure.

5/26 – Teaching Tuesdays – Healing Thoughts

Healing Thought for May 26th

I accept THE Answer today, God.

Think, then, how great your own release will be when you are willing to receive correction for all your problems. You will not keep one, for pain in any form you will not want. And you will see each little hurt resolved before the Holy Spirit's gentle sight. For all of them [are] little in His sight, and worth no more than just a tiny sigh before they disappear, to be forever undone and unremembered…And in its place the Love of God can be remembered, and will shine away all memory of sacrifice and loss.

Taught to Remember

remember-photoI woke up two days ago with the thought that I recently read (somewhere in the Course) that we are being “taught to remember.”  This blew my mind because “remembering” is not something that I generally consider that I have to “learn.”  In fact, when I get concerned about people who appear to have lost the capacity for types of memory, there seem to be limited options about what kind of learning might strengthen this capacity to remember.  “Remembering” is about retrieving information that is already known, right?  And “learning” implies to me that I have to take in information that I did not already know.

So, “learning to remember” is sort of a contradiction in terms, but at the same time, (as with so many things related to ACIM) it works.  Holy Spirit teaches us to remember how to awaken… we learn to remember what we Are.

Searching through the Text, I found the concept in several places (including T12. VI. 2) and I don’t know why I hadn’t noticed it before, except “now” must simply be the perfect time.

The Memory of God

light-of-mindWhat we are resistant to is the memory of God’s Love. We don’t realize that we have denied God’s Love. Denial is what the ego uses as its first defense, it is its foundation. Once we uncover what has been denied, it is no longer hidden.

“No one can escape from illusions unless he looks at them, for not looking is the way they are protected. …We are ready to look more closely at the ego’s thought system because together we have the lamp that will dispel it, and since you realize you do not want it, you must be ready. Let us be very calm in doing this, for we are merely looking honestly for truth. The ‘dynamics’ of the ego will be our lesson for a while, for we must look first at this to see beyond it, since you have made it real. We will undo this error quietly together, and then look beyond it to truth” (T.11.V.1:1,3,4,5,6)

On a deep level we have believed that the separation is real and that we are unworthy otherwise to know God. Yet further still hidden behind the guilt is that memory. We fear the Love of God.

“You are not seriously disturbed by your hostility. You keep it hidden because you are more afraid of what it covers. You could look even upon the ego’s darkest cornerstone without fear if you did not believe that, without the ego, you would find within yourself something you fear even more. You are not really afraid of crucifixion. Your real terror is of redemption” (T.13.III.1:7,8,9,10,11)

The ego will do whatever it can to defend against Love and to keep you from remembering the Truth. We study and practice this Course to uncover the layers that have been built up. When we resist looking at the darkness it is really a camouflage for resistance to looking at the light within.

It does not have to be a painful process. It can be done gently. And, Jesus tells us: “Do not be afraid of the ego ” (T.7.VIII.5:1) We still need to look at what we have made without judgment so the Holy Spirit can look upon it.  When we are afraid of what we see as the ego’s actions it is because we have judged them and this keeps guilt multiplying. This also keeps Holy Spirit at bay.

The memory of God is still wtihin our mind. The Holy Spirit knows this and knows what we experience here is all a dream. We can use our experience here as the classroom. In this classroom, forgiveness is what we practice. We forgive the thought and belief we are separated from God. God is still there as is His Love. Nothing can take that away from us, including the layers of guilt we have built up. Looking at these layers head on rather than continually to deny, ignore or use others as a scapegoat will have us realize the truth. We have believed the separation is true and it is our belief that needs adjusted.

When we accept a belief, “separation” for example, we protect that belief to the utmost. We push down all the thoughts and feelings we do have and try to be Course-perfect as I like to say. Yet, looking at these scary thoughts head on without judgment of any kind (including fear) is what will disintegrate them. It’s to say, “Yes, I had a judgment against a brother and I thought unlovingly about him.” It is said as an observation, rather than a guilty plea. Holy Spirit always sees our innocence in the matter because that is all there is to see.

The memory of God lies within us. We have to stop kidding ourselves and distracting ourselves with what we think is important here in the world, that is our specific problems. Yes, we have to deal with our problems but the one problem is the one thought we hold so steadfast and that is the belief in the separation. It come out in so many avenues here as in our relationships with others. We activate hate and bulit the walls instead of activating miracles and see the golden cord of light that unites us. We undo the ego and we heal the belief of separation by the Atonement with Holy Spirit’s assistance. Isn’t this a better way to live? To live more lovingly and kind versus filled with anxiety and pain? Allow the memory to surface and accept the gift of peace.
