Overcoming Perfectionism

Today, I held a class at my studio this morning on “Overcoming Perfectionism.” It’s not an ACIM-based class, but it is about mind-healing and changing our thoughts. The class is based on the theme of Peaceful Weight Loss & Wellness. We bring up topics such as the one today and other topics such as Self-Compassion (next week), meditation, mindfulness, mindful eating, movement, stress eating, understanding stress & anxiety (last Friday of this month), or healthy relationship with oneself. Great topics, right?

Today in the “Overcoming Perfectionism” each took turns sharing their areas where they experience perfectionism. We can strive to be our best, but when we lose track of that here in the world we are not perfect, anxiety steps in and wreaks havoc. It leaves us with frustration and unhappiness. One way to deal with this is look at our lives and notice that no one is judging us but ourselves. Perfectionism can be a holdover from childhood and of course infused by the ego, but when we are in this mindset, we are not present.

We can get through this by remembering the truth of who we are and that internally we are Perfect in God. We can choose to experience this or not. Imperfection is inherent to being human. We get through this by appreciating ourselves, working on self-acceptance, avoiding comparisons (with others or our own self-imposed expectations), forgiving setbacks and practicing gratitude. Perfectionism is about control. What can we really control in this world anyway?

For me, I’ve had to learn to accept my imperfections. Recently as today, I was guided by Spirit to make a venue change for our October retreat because of financial reasons. At first I trusted, then I didn’t, then I did. I wanted to handle this perfectly. I didn’t want to make a mistake!

Then we had a board meeting to discuss the issue. Just before the board meeting, I had communication from the retreat center that we could possibly lose our deposit. I saw this email at a stoplight (stop and let the Light through), and the calm demeanor I had when I left my studio to travel home for the online meeting with our board had begun to vanish. I only live 7 minutes away.

As the board discussed and made a decision, I accepted my original guidance. Afterward I heard, “How long is an instant?” from The Two Uses of Time in Chapter 15. Jesus states, “If you are tempted to be dispirited by thinking how long it would take to change your mind so completely, ask yourself, “How long is an instant?”

There is the answer.  Could I not give such a short time to the Holy Spirit?

Well, of course I can, and I did.

Can you?

I know I have plenty more stories of my past perfectionism situations. For the most part, I am accepting, but it does sneak in there every so often, like today.

By the way, I am adding on a long-distance option for anyone who made be interested in our sessions. Contact me if you are interested. We meet on Fridays at 10 am Central Time, and I’ll be adding our video conferencing very shortly to these sessions.

In Peace,
Rev. Deb

Clarifying Questions

We have had some questions about our audio and videos for the Lessons and a few other items.

Let me explain what we have been doing for this year. We are marrying older content (the three previous audios) with new material (the new podcast with new posts) to provide a new website for just the Workbook lessons, www.acimlessons.org

It is quite a huge undertaking, especially since the scope of our work spans almost 15 years on the web. We are a very small crew (a handful) and I personally am the only one who performs all of the web work, plus all of the audio and video editing (besides recording). All of us who do this, myself included, are volunteers with no compensation whatsoever. I try my best to stay on top of it and do what I am able. I also work and own a meditation/yoga studio. My husband works both full-time and part-time for the Wisconsin Army National Guard. Others on the team work too.

It would be lovely if this would be my paid full-time job. However, our mission is to keep the largest portion of what we offer for FREE for ACIM Students versus what other teachers or organizations who have large teams of staff and charge much higher fees for what they offer, thus keeping out those who cannot afford to do so. My background is in non-profit so this has never felt right to me. I want everyone to have access and our policy is we never turn anyone away from our programs because of finances. I cite the Psychotherapy supplement to ACIM in this regard.

We only charge for our 6-week classes, webinars, and retreats and do so minimally. For our study groups we do not require payment and are on a love offering basis. Everything we offer we do appreciate donations to help pay for the myriad of expenses. There are a significant amount of expenses to keep it all running and sometimes not enough donations to meet the expense. That’s being transparent.

The daily emails are generated from the website itself. We’re all here to work together for this community so everyone’s suggestions are most welcome.

I hope this clarifies your questions, and feel free to ask more.

We may be small, but we are mighty companions walking the road together of practical application.

In Peace,
Rev. Deb

Sunday ACIM Study Group in Madison

Opened with Lesson 121-Forgiveness is the key to happiness. (We used teh imagery from the practice portion of the lesson as our meditation.)
Practical Application Topic: Forgiveness

After a lively discussion on forgiveness in our lives, we turned to The Song of Prayer. If you do not have a copy of The Song of Prayer in your book, as it is only included in the 3rd edition of the Foundation for Inner Peace version, then you can read it here.

In The Song of Prayer, we read together in chapter 2. Forgiveness, the sections, II. Forgiveness-to-Destroy and III. Forgiveness-for-Salvation. These are normally not sections that most people read but are extremely helpful in our understanding of the Course’s concept of forgiveness.

We closed with a silent meditation and announcements of what’s upcoming.

Tuesday ACIM Study Group by Video/Phone Conferencing

Tuesday’s ACIM Text Study Group was full of rich sharing and the joining of like minds who participate in living the course in their daily lives. We began the evening joining in meditation focusing our meditation time on our Daily Workbook Lesson, which was Lesson number: 184 “The Name of God is my inheritance”

We started our reading with page 72 of the Text, which is the beginning of chapter 5 starting with the “Introduction”. We discussed the prayer “Let me know this brother as myself” and how we are each intertwined with one another and that their happiness is our happiness and their sadness is ours sadness. It’s a resounding answer we all had because it shows us that healing benefits both parties equally. We also discussed “It is impossible for a child of God to love his neighbor except as himself”. As we discussed this we brought up our actions towards others or actions we felt how we felt direction towards us and how our love radiates back to those around us when we wish for peace and for happiness.

We went on to read Chapter 5 section I on page 73 and we read paragraphs 1-4. As we read these paragraphs there was a lot of beautiful sharing that truly showed each one of us how we apply the course. The paragraphs spoke about how giving increases through the reinforcement of someone making an idea his own. Everything is an idea and through being given away they only strengthen. Our actions and what we do are reinforced within us by what we do to others and how we treat those around us. The sharing this evening was very focused on our actions and our attitudes and what we can do to exemplify the course and the peace we’ve found.

The Tuesday evening ACIM Text Study Group meets every Tuesday at 6:30 CST. This is a group that has a beautiful mix of new and seasoned Course students allowing for extremely rich sharing for all. Please feel free to join us any Tuesday you are able we welcome you with total open hearts and look forward to what you will contribute to the group. We look forward to you joining us in the relaxed atmosphere of discussing our Practical Application to the Text of the Course. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Wishing you the deepest peace,

Sunday ACIM Study Group in Madison

Opened with Lesson 289 – The past is over. It can touch me not.
Practical Application Topic: Holy Encounters

Personal miracle stories and examples were shared in relation to how we see our brothers and sisters. Do we really see them as they are now?

We read Text, Chapter 13, IV. The Function of Time. When we look at one another we must realize for one, the other is our mirror, and for two, we place the past on this person. It doesn’t matter if it is direct past with the person or our own past with other people. We project our fears and guilt upon others all the time. Can we see through the eyes of forgiveness and meet another in the present moment?

For only “now” is here, and only “now” presents the opportunities for the holy encounters in which salvation can be found.

We closed with a silent meditation and announcements of what’s upcoming.

This week’s video teaching is “Holy Encounters.”

Tuesday ACIM Study Group by Video/Phone Conferencing

Text Chapter 4 Section VII “Creation and Communication”

The Study Group opened with a meditation over Workbook Lesson 177

“God is but Love, and therefore so am I.” Which is a review of Workbook Lessons

163: “There is no death. The Son of God is free” and Workbook Lesson 164: “Now are we one with Him Who is our Source.”

As we shared our personal application of the daily Workbook Lesson we discussed how amazing the Course changes lives and how powerful practically applying and living the Course can be. The Power of love that flows from the Course and how The Holy Spirit confirms one is on the correct Spiritual Path for them when one seeks confirmation that their following Guidance.

We also discussed the topic of the ego having a “game plan”; how the ego will do what the ego does and will cause separation, brings negative thoughts, and anything to distract from ones Peace. When the ego perceives a threat of the Course a student can increase their ability in hearing Guidance from The Holy Spirit during this challenge because one begins to recognize and see the egos attempt to take ones Peace at any cost and any possible way. When one is able to gain vigilance in recognizing the attempts of the ego and is able to seek and receive Guidance from The Holy Spirit it allows the Course Student to keep their Peace on solid ground rather than wavering with the ego’s guidance.

Lastly in our hour of Holy conversation together we discussed where one’s feelings and thoughts come from. How we are created in the image of the Creator and how our Truth is True and how God flows to, through, and from us. Also, that God communicates to His creations through their thoughts and feelings that come into their minds. The idea that like minds communicate with one another opened our eyes once again that we have a divine connection.

The Tuesday Night ACIM Text Study is an open Drop-In Study Group and all are welcome anytime. The Tuesday Night ACIM Text Study Group that is always filled with deep personal sharing from each Course Student’s Practical Application practice in A Course In Miracles.

Wishing you the Deepest Peace,

Ryan Westbrook-Vigue

Wednesday Study Group by Video/Phone Conferencing

Greetings Everyone,

We began with a meditation on Lesson 178, a review of these ideas: Let not my mind deny the thought of God. I am entrusted with the gifts of God. God is but love, and therefore so am I.

After agreeing to the group guidelines and checking in with each other about the previous week, we began our study of Section 25, in the Manual for Teachers: ARE “PSYCHIC” POWERS DESIRABLE?

We discussed the facts that there are no unnatural powers, that everyone has them, even if they are unaware of them, and that, as long as they are used in the service of Love and with the Holy Spirit’s guidance, they are helpful.

During the session, one of the participants shared a story illustrating this sentence: The limits the world places on communication are the chief barriers to direct experience of the Holy Spirit, Whose Presence is always there and Whose Voice is available but for the hearing. The participant said that a family member had spoken angrily during a meal, and, with quiet words, the participant’s spouse helped the participant not respond to the seeming attack. The next day, the participant wrote a note asking forgiveness of the family member, who responded lovingly. The participant felt that the Holy Spirit aided communication among all involved.

We will not be meeting next Wednesday, due to the holiday, but will do so on July 11. Please feel free to join us from 12:30 to 2:00 Central time.

Many Blessings,

Mari Dole

Sunday ACIM Study Group in Madison

Opened with Lesson 306 – The gift of Christ is all I seek today.
Practical Application Topic: Compassion

Personal miracle stories and examples were shared in relation to compassion, both self-compassion, and compassion for others and how we can incorporate this more into our life.

We were guided to Chapter 31, V. Self-Concept versus Self. This section speaks of the face of innocence that we present to the world. It is a fascinating read as we learn about the shrouded vaults where we hold our brothers’ and our own sins. We keep the face of innocence to the world to hide. We feel that we have been treated unfairly and we only attack in self-defense.

In the end, we learn,
There is no statement that the world is more afraid to hear than this:
I do not know the thing I am, and therefore do not know what I am doing, where I am, or how to look upon the world or on myself.
Yet in this learning is salvation born. And What you are will tell you of Itself.

What helps us with this, is honesty. When we can look at ourselves with honesty without condemnation, we can make the shift with the Holy Spirit. We learn to forgive ourselves and others.

We closed with a silent meditation and announcements of what’s upcoming.

Monday ACIM Study Group by Video/Phone Conferencing

Greetings, all!

A unanimous joy in starting the week in our ACIM study and sharing, rings out once again!

We began with a lovely meditation based on today’s Workbook Lesson:

(162) I am as God created me.

We always enjoy sharing our ways of working with the Lessons in general, and as this is the third presentation of this idea, we were each able to share the ways in which our understanding and our practical application have evolved.

We moved on to the Text reading for this week: Chapter 4 THE ILLUSIONS OF THE EGO, Section V. The Ego-Body Illusion, and were all quite eager to dive into this one.

We seemed to experience a good deal of synchronicity today in desiring to bring out many of the same points, while sharing our own unique experience.

We each had examples of how “all things work together for good”, and marveled at how Spirit moves through multiple people or groups of people and events, as this good unfolds.

How full of examples we were as to Jesus’ words that “Preoccupations with problems set up to be incapable of solution are favorite ego devices for impeding learning progress.”

More important was our sharing of the truth – the truth we truly do know,

that we can choose not to traffic in these “problems” of the ego.

Jesus tells us that we must learn to ask the question: “what for?”, what is the purpose?  He explains that purposeful decision directs our efforts automatically!

What happens then?  “All things work together for good”!

Join us next Monday morning, where all things work together for good in our Study Group at 9:00 CT/10:00 ET!  You will find a warm welcome with us!

With love,

Tracey

Tuesday ACIM Study Group by Video/Phone Conferencing

Tuesday Night Drop-In Study Group is a unique format because we rotate our exploration, using the Text, the Workbook Lessons and the Manual for Teachers.  Everyone seems enthusiastic with this broad spectrum of study experience!

We began with a meditation based upon the Workbook Lesson of the day: (163) There is no death.  The Son of God is free.  We used Jesus’ beautiful prayer at the end of the Lesson, to take into silent meditation.

In His prayer, Jesus asks that God bless our eyes, and give them the ability to see beyond the illusion of death which confronts us, continually.  This He asks, so that we may see the eternal life that shines in all!

As always, we shared our own experience of working with this lesson and examples from the day.

Our Text reading and study was

Chapter 15 THE HOLY INSTANT, Section V. The Holy Instant and Special Relationships.  We read together as always, and made sure we had a working sense of these

specific concepts of “Holy Instant”

and “special relationship”, and then how these terms appear in our life experience.

Tracey

Wednesday ACIM Study Group by Video/Phone Conferencing

Hello everyone. We began with a meditation from today’s lesson 164; for two minutes, we practiced affectionate breathing, taking in love on the inhale and sending love out on the exhale. We then checked in, briefly sharing how we were.

Our reading for today was from The Manual for Teachers, from which comes this paragraph:

M-23.7. This course has come from him because his words have reached you in a language you can love and understand. 2 Are other teachers possible, to lead the way to those who speak in different tongues and appeal to different symbols? 3 Certainly there are. 4 Would God leave anyone without a very present help in time of trouble; a savior who can symbolize Himself? 5 Yet do we need a many-faceted curriculum, not because of content differences, but because symbols must shift and change to suit the need. 6 Jesus has come to answer yours. 7 In him you find God’s Answer. 8 Do you, then, teach with him, for he is with you; he is always here.

We discussed the role of Jesus in healing, the fact that he symbolizes the unconditional love of God, that we can call upon him because he has made the same journey we are making now, and that other teachers too have manifested this love.

All of us shared examples from our lives to illustrate the ways in which God’s love has healed and strengthened us.

Please feel free to join us each Wednesday at 12:30 PM, Central time.

Many Blessings,

Mari Dole

Monday ACIM Study Group

This morning’s Monday Study Group opened beautifully with a meditation based upon today’s Workbook Lesson 134 Let me perceive forgiveness as it is. The meditation included Rev. Deb’s Thoughts from her journal entry which is published in her book, and can be found on the Miracles One website.

We were moved to explore this issue of forgiveness which is so central to the Course. We discussed our own journeys of forgiveness, how we understand this Lesson specifically, and where we are with our forgiveness work today. The discussion was rich, comforting and inspiring.

Our text reading as found in the weekly schedule is: Chapter 4, THE ILLUSIONS OF THE EGO, beginning on p. 52 of the FIP text. This week on the schedule we are reading the Introduction and section I. Right Teaching and Right Lessons.

We delved into the Introduction, into our understanding of devotion, of inspiration and our personal experience of Spirit’s word – to “Be still and know that I am God.” Finally from the Introduction, we shared our understanding of the crucifixion – both as we were originally taught and from the perspective of Jesus’ teaching to us, today.

Section I. Right Teaching and Right Learning, brought forth discussion of our ego protections which are activated in the face of change. Change is present as we move and grow ever more toward God. With our little willingness, Holy Spirit is able to make correction in each moment.

We shared about the teacher and student really being the same, and all as expression within the One.
Referring to our previous section, and the “authority problem”, which is really the issue of authorship, this section explores those things of which the ego is author, and those of Truth, authored by God.

Fear for example, is a child of the ego, and we learn that the ego itself fears. This section explains that the ego is afraid of the spirit’s joy, for once having experienced it, one begins to withdraw investment into ego protection, and into fear.

Jesus suggests we entrust him with our body and our ego, so that we might be unconcerned and allow Him to teach us of their unimportance.
So thrilling to know that Jesus understands our temptation to find importance in the ego and the body, because he was once tempted to believe in them, himself!

Jesus’ instruction brings us his promise as he says to us:
“In this world you need not have tribulation because I have overcome the world. That is why you should be of good cheer”.

Please know you are welcome to drop-in and join us next Monday, or any Monday morning at 9:00 CT/10:00 ET, for our Monday Morning Study Group! There is a warm welcome waiting for you there!

With blessings and love!
Tracey

Tuesday ACIM Study Group

Tuesday Nights ACIM Study Group was a rich sharing of personal application. Below is a summary of what was discussed last night…

Workbook Lesson 135: “If I defend myself I am attacked.”

Last night the Tuesday night drop-in study group read and discussed our daily workbook lesson, which was lesson 135, “If I defend myself I am attacked.”

We began our time together with an opening meditation focusing on Workbook Lesson 135. Rev. Deb’s journal entry was included from her book “Divine Messages.”

As we read the Workbook Lesson 135 we discussed how one sometimes will view/listen to the ego regarding the body and how one tries in vain to protect it even to the point of defending the body only to attack our brothers in reality we forget our place in the Sonship where we heal our mind and share our found Salvation and Peace with our brothers.

“Defenses are the plans you undertake to make against the truth.” We also took time in sharing our personal thoughts and personal experiences we’ve had on our Spiritual journeys and how defenses effect the belief that one knows what is in ones own best interest and how one may bypass hearing the Guidance of the Holy Spirit and place trust in past experiences.

The Tuesday Night ACIM Study Group is always a rich discussion of personal application.
Much Peace,

Ryan Westbrook-Vigue

Wednesday ACIM Study Group

We began with an opening meditation. We then discussed Section 19 of the Manual for Teachers: What Is Justice? At first, we found this topic somewhat puzzling, but as we went along, the six of us began to share our experiences, both of forgiveness and judgment.

All in all, the session was very rich, and we agreed that sharing our experiences in trust with one another was helpful and supportive.

These sentences from the section sum up our session: Justice is the divine correction for injustice. Injustice is the basis for all the judgments of the world. All concepts of your brothers and yourself; all fears of future states and all concerns about the past, stem from injustice. Salvation is God’s justice. Perception can make whatever picture the mind desires to see. God’s justice points to Heaven just because it is entirely impartial. Perception rests, the mind is still, and light returns again.

Blessings,

Mari

Sunday ACIM Study Group in Madison

I realized I can share with you too what we do at our in-person study group here in Madison. Currently, I open with a Workbook Lesson as a meditation and we share on the Lesson afterward. Then, I introduce a topic which is usually the topic that I have recorded as the Sunday video that is published on Facebook and YouTube at 10 am Central Time. We share practical applications on the topic and our miracle stories. Halfway through this session, we are guided to a section in ACIM to read. We close with a short meditation. This can vary from week to week as I go as guided by Spirit in my facilitation. This will be the same for the Thursday Summer Series we will do on Thursday nights via conferencing when our current class completes and goes on hiatus until the fall.

This Sunday, we spent time in our opening meditation with Lesson 164  – Now are we one with Him Who is Our Source. We shared a little on that lesson, then a question arose from one of the members regarding how to deal with family members who are estranged or are at the opposite end of the political spectrum. Since it was a small group because of Mother’s Day, we stayed on this discussion instead of moving to continue our reading from last week on The Substitute Reality. Practical application is always the key!

In all, it is to see everyone through the Eyes of Christ. Answer their call for love with Love, yet if you need to maintain boundaries out of safety, do so. Jesus does not ask us to prove our worth or forgiveness nor are we to be a doormat for others. It is always an “In-job” of self-responsibility. There is no one out there to blame nor to fix how uncomfortable we feel. We need to meet with our Inner Teacher for assistance. In any decision, whether it is to go to that family event or not, we ask Jesus/Holy Spirit to be our Teacher in making that decision. It is a process and forgiveness will be as we are ready, and remember, it is not the old way of looking at forgiveness. It is to realize that in truth, the error never occurred. We are to see our brothers as ourselves. They are the mirror to us. What do we wish to see?

Kindness in Your Difficult Times

Kindness in Your Difficult Times
with Rev. Deb Phelps
