The Healing Power of Kindness Volume Two Forgiving Our Limitations

By Ken Wapnick

Our Next Study for Our Study Groups

Our next series starts this week for the Wednesday study group and in a week or so for the Sunday study group. Having finished the book by Ken Wapnick, “The Healing Power of Kindness: Volume 1: Releasing Judgment,” the groups decided to move on to Volume Two. This is an excellent addition to our “Being Truly Helpful” theme for this year. It is available in print and on Kindle on Amazon.

All are welcome to attend even if you have not read Volume 1. Volume 1 related to being kind to others whereas Volume 1 is about being kind to ourselves.

Description: This second book on kindness centers on two statements of caution Jesus offers in “A Course in Miracles.” Characteristic of his gentle guidance, he tells us not to be disturbed by the shadows surrounding our “little willingness” to learn from him, and not to despair because of our limitations. These cautions were the themes of two workshops presented at our center—”Shadows of Limitation” and “Sweet Are the Uses of Adversity”—that form the basis of this book. If we identify with the ego, our limitations become cause for comparison and judgment, and thereby impel us to seek ways to overcome the imperfections in our bodies and the world. This focus serves the ego’s purpose of concealing the mind’s decision for guilt, substituting a limited self for the unlimited Self of Christ. Identifying with the loving Presence of the Holy Spirit in our right minds, we recognize our self-defeating choice, thus allowing true correction to heal. We now look kindly on our imperfections, redefining them not as our reality but as mere detours on our journey home. These shadows of limitation become the contours of the classroom that Jesus uses to teach us his kind lessons of forgiveness. Thus do they ultimately fade in the light of the Atonement, in which we are all joined as the one perfect Son of God.

How to Prepare and Read the Book:

Each day you will be reading from the book, “The Healing Power of Kindness. When you read, you will be doing more than just “reading.” I strongly encourage you to set aside the time to do so. Try not to read ahead. Take the reading as it is assigned.
Use the following format:
  • Prepare your space to read and journal. Be sure it is quiet. Make this a sacred time, light a candle or put on meditation music.
  • Before you begin reading, meditate for at least 5-10 minutes to clear your mind and so you may be open to the wisdom.
  • After meditation, open your journal and place the date and a 1-2 sentence intention to Holy Spirit.
  • Read a few paragraphs or a page. (Be sure to spread the reading out through the week, perhaps one page a day, etc). As you read, you may wish to jot down questions, make notes or observations.
  • Close the book. Take time to reflect on what you have read. As you journal, you may wish to reflect on how you could use what you are learning in your daily life. Or, what information in the reading made an impact. You may wish to refer to your ACIM book as well.
  • The essence of your daily journaling will be shared in our sharing in each week’s class. It is important that you are focusing on how to use the material in your life and not so much the reading was “nice”, “beautiful”, or “inspiring.” A Course in Miracles needs to be applied in every aspect of our lives to make an impact. Even 10 minutes of journaling can be powerful.

“Truly Helpful Prayer”

Teaching Session 4

Here’s a recap of our fourth teaching session, led by Rev. Deb, which focused on the fourth line in the Truly Helpful Prayer, “I am content to be wherever He wishes, knowing He goes there with me.”

Session Highlights:

  • Meditation: The session opened with a grounding meditation, focusing on contentment and presence. Participants were guided through mindfulness techniques and the affirmation “I am content in the here and now,” emphasizing acceptance and peace in the current moment, aligning with the spirit of divine presence.
  • Discussion on the “Truly Helpful” Prayer: We recapped the previous week’s readings and then the exploration centered around the fourth sentence of the Truly Helpful Prayer from “A Course in Miracles”: “I am content to be wherever He wishes, knowing He goes there with me.” This discussion invited a deeper understanding of divine will and our joyful acceptance of being led by it.
  • Exploring the Prayer’s Fourth Sentence: Attention was given to comprehending and living the truth of the fourth sentence. This includes embracing our spiritual path with joy and trust, knowing that divine guidance is always present.
  • Reflection and Journaling Exercise: Participants were encouraged to reflect and journal about their experiences and feelings towards being content with divine placement, emphasizing the lesson of never being alone on our journey.
  • Reading Assignment: To prepare for our next session, we encourage you to read The Song of Prayer, 2. Forgiveness, III. Forgiveness-for-Salvation.

Homework Assignments:

  • Reflection on the Fourth Sentence: Continue to ponder the fourth sentence of the prayer. Allow its meaning to resonate with you throughout the week.
  • Practice the “I am here” Meditation: Regularly engage in the meditation shared by Rev. Deb to enhance your presence and awareness.

I Want the Peace of God

This week I’ll be taking a break from posting every day. I do need that respite from time to time. Today on the Tuesday show I led our discussion on this week’s reading, Lesson 185 – I want the peace of God. We have to ask ourselves, “Do I really want peace?” and “Am I willing to give up my dreams of peace here in the illusion to have everlasting peace?” Rev. Gayle, Ryan and I share our personal experiences, sometimes met with shame and embarrassment, Within peace is always there, it is a part of us, it is us. We just need to stop putting the peace set in a future time. “I’ll have peace when ___ happens.” You can be peaceful now. You can be happy now. It’s your choice.

Take a listen to our show this week below or at the link: http://www.spreaker.com/user/miraclesone/i-want-the-peace-of-god-4-1-14

We’ll start a new theme next week with “Roll the Stone Away”. Next week’s reading is “The Responsibility for Sight” in the Text, Chapter 21, Section II.

Feel free to share your insights, make comments or ask a question about this week’s reading either on our Google Email Group or our Facebook Group.

Spend the Day, Pt. 1

This week we focus our attention on Manual for Teachers, 16. How Should the Teacher of God Spend His Day? Remember this month’s theme is “How to Have a Happy Day” so I am sure that the advice in this section will prove beneficial to our goal of a happy day.

Be sure to read the section for yourself and share with us on our Facebook Group or our Google Email Group.

Paragraph 1 – He will be told all that his role should be, this day and every day.

…and he keeps in constant contact with the Answer.

I have to trust that I will in fact be told what I am to do every day and I do. I feel confident in my connection with the Holy Spirit and in fact I do maintain an “always on” connection with Him. As I go about my day I speak to Him as I would a friend, or even how I talk to my three kitties throughout the day. Maintaining communication is key to success. If I isolate myself from the Holy Spirit, what will I gain? If I isolate myself from others, what will I gain? Nothing but more separation. It is in the joining with Him and with my mighty companions that I receive such gifts of healing and peace.

I enjoy my days of joining. Whether it is time spent in silence, meditation and contemplation with Him or the communion with fellow MiraclesOne students. I receive rejuvenation from both experiences. I cannot even think of how my life would be if I had no connections with those of like-minds at all. I probably would ruminate in my ego. Sharing together does provide for a happy day!

Paragraph 2 – But what about those who have not reached his certainty? …What must they do to learn to give the day to God? …Routines as such are dangerous, because they easily become gods in their own right, threatening the very goals for which they were set up. … Broadly speaking, then, it can be said that it is well to start the day right.

For me, I have a meditation and study practice and have for years. Yet, I do not worship that time spent. If something occurs to disrupt it, I find time later or not at all. I saw this many years ago when I started my meditation practice. What could is the “routine” if I find that if I miss I become more irritated. Isn’t the practice of meditation and the Course supposed to assist me in the times I don’t have time to practice. As Jesus suggests in the Workbook, use the times that we forget for fodder for the lesson practice.

I say tomorrow, I will start the day with peace as I decide that is my one and only goal.

Join us for the Tuesday ACIM with MiraclesOne radio show as we talk about this reading. It takes place March 18th at 2 pm EST/1 pm CST. You can call in and join in the discussion at www.miraclesoneradio.org
