Overcoming Perfectionism

Today, I held a class at my studio this morning on “Overcoming Perfectionism.” It’s not an ACIM-based class, but it is about mind-healing and changing our thoughts. The class is based on the theme of Peaceful Weight Loss & Wellness. We bring up topics such as the one today and other topics such as Self-Compassion (next week), meditation, mindfulness, mindful eating, movement, stress eating, understanding stress & anxiety (last Friday of this month), or healthy relationship with oneself. Great topics, right?

Today in the “Overcoming Perfectionism” each took turns sharing their areas where they experience perfectionism. We can strive to be our best, but when we lose track of that here in the world we are not perfect, anxiety steps in and wreaks havoc. It leaves us with frustration and unhappiness. One way to deal with this is look at our lives and notice that no one is judging us but ourselves. Perfectionism can be a holdover from childhood and of course infused by the ego, but when we are in this mindset, we are not present.

We can get through this by remembering the truth of who we are and that internally we are Perfect in God. We can choose to experience this or not. Imperfection is inherent to being human. We get through this by appreciating ourselves, working on self-acceptance, avoiding comparisons (with others or our own self-imposed expectations), forgiving setbacks and practicing gratitude. Perfectionism is about control. What can we really control in this world anyway?

For me, I’ve had to learn to accept my imperfections. Recently as today, I was guided by Spirit to make a venue change for our October retreat because of financial reasons. At first I trusted, then I didn’t, then I did. I wanted to handle this perfectly. I didn’t want to make a mistake!

Then we had a board meeting to discuss the issue. Just before the board meeting, I had communication from the retreat center that we could possibly lose our deposit. I saw this email at a stoplight (stop and let the Light through), and the calm demeanor I had when I left my studio to travel home for the online meeting with our board had begun to vanish. I only live 7 minutes away.

As the board discussed and made a decision, I accepted my original guidance. Afterward I heard, “How long is an instant?” from The Two Uses of Time in Chapter 15. Jesus states, “If you are tempted to be dispirited by thinking how long it would take to change your mind so completely, ask yourself, “How long is an instant?”

There is the answer.  Could I not give such a short time to the Holy Spirit?

Well, of course I can, and I did.

Can you?

I know I have plenty more stories of my past perfectionism situations. For the most part, I am accepting, but it does sneak in there every so often, like today.

By the way, I am adding on a long-distance option for anyone who made be interested in our sessions. Contact me if you are interested. We meet on Fridays at 10 am Central Time, and I’ll be adding our video conferencing very shortly to these sessions.

In Peace,
Rev. Deb

Learning About the Ego

Hi Everyone,

Last night we started our new class on What is the Ego, the Body & the World? And, it is not what you think! It is not a beginner class although it can be. We are getting down to basics and even if you have been studying for some as some of our students have, you will find the sharing deep and rich.

We started off the class with a meditation to bring us into the present moment. We then shared our intentions and what we hope to gain after our six weeks together. It is important to put forth before us the goal as Jesus speaks of in the section “Setting the Goal.” Having done so the class was ready to attend to our first reading from the Workbook for Students, “What is the Ego?”

By beginning with the ego, we can see that the ego is quite literally a fearful thought. As some students shared throughout the evening, it is a thought system of specialness. Some expressed their attachments in various forms, be it attachment to identity, achievement, addictions, etc.

We have to ask ourselves “How does that work for me?”

The ego’s voice is there telling me to be on high alert. If one is anxious it is because we are being vigilant for the ego and not the Kingdom of God.

Others expressed specialness in the form of “I am special because of my profession. I have to prove that I am better.” This only brought pain. Once realized, we can be relieved of our the burden and the pain.

Here in our study the word “ego” is different than the psychological term for the “ego.” We go back to the Course definition of it is a fearful thought, a false self made as a substitute for the Self that God created. Simply, it is an illusion.

In our second reading of the night, we turned to the Clarification of Terms, The Ego-The Miracle. One of the sentences stood out to the group being “Are you ready to help me save the world?” Are we? If we are, then we practice our daily lessons, we forgive, we bring peace to our mind and we remain present in the now moment.

It is easy to become distracted as we practice. There is the fear of missing out. In this day of technology, sometimes it seems we have a smartphone permanently glued to our hand always waiting to see who will message us, or what’s happening on Facebook, or on CNN.

When do we stop the ego’s rush of bombardment of information so that our minds can come in the quiet and calm of God. We have to make the steps and the daily Lessons help us to do that. Our thoughts are meaningless and this world is meaningless as we are learning of late.

We don’t have to follow the ego blindly at all and mock God by asking Him to prove that He is right. We can accept it.

We don’t have to like the ideas or understand them but simply practice them. By our practice we will know the truth.

I am still accepting students in the class up until next Thursday. January 17th and you can watch our class video to get caught up before then. If you cannot make Thursday nights, there is a self-study option that will allow you access to all the class videos and our email forum for discussion.

More information can be found at the link below. I hope you will choose to join us on this journey. We gain so much when we enter into communion with one another.

Peace,
Rev. Deb

My Experience with “Awakening to Joy”

I had the privilege of attending the MiraclesOne “Awakening to Joy” retreat in March. I would like to share my personal experience and the Joy that Awoke within me. The retreat was based on the book “Awaking to Joy: 10 Steps to Happiness,” written by James Baraz and A Course in Miracles. The topic of each group session came from this book. Each session encouraged attendees to reflect deep within themselves to truly awaken their True inherent identity.

As I took the time we each were given to process each topic The Holy Spirit reminded me of the personal intention I set about a year and a half ago to live the most authentic and transparent life I can. I set this intention during one of my morning “Prayer, Meditation, and Centering” times and for years I would try to keep the appearance that all was well in every area of my life. The Holy Spirit knew when I was ready for the shift of my perception that not only sharing, but also showing that I did not live perfectly in an imperfect world. My fellow Course students helped me immensely.

I have experienced so much more joy and light-heartedness in my life and have made great strides on my journey towards inner peace. The retreat’s focus helped me in more ways than words can express. As a focal point on remembering each topic, we were given different colored stones, which started with a cloudier colored stone and advancing towards a clear stone. These stones are wonderful reminders of not only the beautiful and transformational retreat that was created for the participants but to also represent the outcomes of our life transformations and of the deep reflection that we practiced at this retreat.

My husband also attended the retreat and we found areas that connected us as a couple, but also areas that showed us parts of our lives where the light of joy was shed or needed to be shed. After the retreat, while my husband and I were on our way home The Holy Spirit showed me a joyous truth. We ended the retreat on the Judeo-Christian celebration of Palm Sunday that begins “Holy Week” leading to the following Sunday, which is Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday is the celebration of Christ’s resurrection from the crucifixion. The resurrection of “New Life” or the starting of a new chapter in my life that is occurring is such a joyous and peaceful reason to celebrate my “Awakening to Joy!”

Ryan Westbrook-Vigue

If you missed the retreat, we have a 10-week class that starts this Thursday, May 3rd.

The class is held online in our video and phone conferencing room. If you cannot make the day and time for the class, there is a self-study option where you will receive the videos, assignments and any extra resources. As Ryan described, this is powerful and enriching material that will be presented in this class.

We awaken to joy by awakening to the good within ourselves. We don’t try hard to be joyful or happy, we allow our experience to be what it is while opening to the possibility of joy.

As you learn to be present in your life, to love yourself and others, to be kind to yourself in difficult times, to let go of what is not needed, to knowing blamelessness, and to allow compassion and gratefulness, all these will naturally lead to the Light of Joy dawning within.

I will be incorporating A Course in Miracles along with some material from an insightful book on mindfulness called: Awakening Joy: 10 Steps That Will Put You on the Road to Real Happiness.

Please note: The book is not necessary to attend the class as I will be sharing excerpts from the book that are in alignment with ACIM.

Together in this class, we will use ACIM readings, material from the book, visualizations, meditation, homework assignments, journaling, and weekly class sharing.

I hope you will join us.

What Do I Have To Be Joyful About?

When you saw the theme for our retreat at the end of this month, March, entitled “Awakening to Joy” you probably thought everyone would be walking around the entire weekend in a blissful state with no cares or worries.

Maybe you said to yourself, “What do I have to be joyful about?”

Well, that’s not quite the intention for the weekend.

You may have a physical condition, a recent bad breakup in a relationship, or dealing with anxiety or sadness, money issues, or any other situation that you feel would block your happiness and put a damper on the weekend for you.

What if you didn’t have to be different from how you are at this moment? Can you let yourself be open to the possibility of finding joy in your life? Can you be willing to be willing and allow that little bit of willingness to lead the way?

Listen to what James Baraz says in his book Awakening Joy, one of the foundations of our retreat.

“Your life circumstances do not have to change a lot before you can find happiness in the midst of them. While it’s true that our well-being is affected by how we live, we also know that even in the best of circumstances we can be unhappy.  And sometimes in very challenging situations, we can feel surprisingly at ease. While this book will encourage you to bring experiences and circumstances into your life that contribute to your well-being, the key factor is deciding to change your mind. As my colleague Sylvia Boorstein puts it, “Happiness is an inside job.” When we consciously intend to be happy, actually saying that intention aloud or to ourselves, we set in motion a radical transformation. Profound changes begin to take place inside us, in our body and our mind. The momentum of positive change grows as we learn to choose actions and situations that align us with our intention.”

You see at the retreat; we are gathered together to set the intention and allow the process to unfold over the course of the weekend. We can begin to change our mind, little by little.

We’ll be looking at these areas – Intention, Mindfulness, Gratefulness, Finding Joy in Difficult Times, Blamelessness, Letting Go, Loving Ourselves and Others, Compassion and Simply Being.

A lotus flower grows in the mud. You would not think that something so gorgeous could do so, but it does. It sprouts under water making its home in lakes and ponds where above the water is fairly still on the surface. Underneath it is surrounded by mud and muck, fish, insects and simply dirty, rough conditions.

As the lotus maintains its strength in these conditions and pushes aside the obstacles, you too can make your way to clearer areas in your life. You too can rise above adversity.

It truly is a gift you give yourself by attending. There is plenty of time built in to relax and reflect, to meditate, to be with like-minds, to enjoy time for you which probably has been needed in a long while if you are truly honest with yourself.

And if you choose to do so, in April there will be additional support with a 10-week class that will take you deeper into the process. You will have free access to this class as a retreat participant.

If you feel you have listened to that little willingness and now are ready to change your mind would like to join us, we do have a couple rooms left, and there also a commuter option and even hotels nearby if we do sell out.

Give the gift to yourself today. Go here to register.

The Holy Spirit is Our Compass

In Lesson 155 – I will step back and let Him lead the way, it states, There is a way of living in the world that is not here, although it seems to be. You do not change appearance, though you smile more frequently. Your forehead is serene; your eyes are quiet. And the ones who walk the world as you do recognize their own. Yet those who have not yet perceived the way will recognize you also, and believe that you are like them, as you were before.

Who wouldn’t want to live like this? Let that passage soak in.

I know in my own practice, and I emphasize the word, practice, I do smile more frequently. I feel at ease and keep my composure. The calm center is always there even if I am entangled in a difficult situation.

The other piece to this is Lesson 155 itself and its words — “I will step back.” This means resigning yourself from taking the leadership role in your life. Let yourself be guided. When I step back, I allow the strength of God to step forward. I can trust in Him. When I step back, I am in the Quiet Center of my being. In the quiet center, I need do nothing.

Jesus tells us in Chapter 18, VII. I Need Do Nothing:

Who needs do nothing has no need for time. To do nothing is to rest, and make a place within you where the activity of the body ceases to demand attention. Into this place the Holy Spirit comes, and there abides. He will remain when you forget, and the body’s activities return to occupy your conscious mind.

Yet there will always be this place of rest to which you can return. And you will be more aware of this quiet center of the storm than all its raging activity. This quiet center, in which you do nothing, will remain with you, giving you rest in the midst of every busy doing on which you are sent. For from this center will you be directed how to use the body sinlessly. It is this center, from which the body is absent, that will keep it so in your awareness of it.

We have become so accustomed to doing, doing, doing. We interfere all too often instead of retreat to allow Spirit to guide. We have to remove the beliefs that are in opposition to the truth. All this Instead of simply being. What do we do? We plan, we judge, we interpret, we analyze, and go round and round in circles chasing our tail. We spend a lot of time either in the past or the future with our regrets and our worries. We focus on what others are doing and how they could solve their problems. We think that all of this will point us in the right direction. Sometimes we barely breathe at all. Our schedules are full, and we find ourselves overcommitted. Something inside us is calling us into the silence and in the Arms of God.

Now is the time to Let Him Lead the Way.

The Holy Spirit is our compass. He helps us to navigate the world, and He leads us in the direction of God, of Home, of Heaven. He is the tool for us to use.

We can live differently. We can live a peaceful life, even if we have days that are full of chores and errands and our minds full of worries and concerns. We can lead a guided life. We can trust the Holy Spirit.

By grounding ourselves and coming into the present moment, very simply and very gently all will be revealed to us. We will find that some things just don’t matter. And what matters will be obvious to us.

What will be obvious to us is how much we desired peace in our lives. We have had a glimpse here and a glimpse there but not sustained for any reasonable amount of time.

Perhaps we have been relatively calm in our lives, yet one adverse situation can cause us to go off the deep end and into depression or anger. When we become solid, grounded and centered, we see that our safety is in the moment and we have everything that we need here and now.

We feel unsafe and afraid when unexpected circumstances occur. Yet here with Holy Spirit and allowing Him to take the lead, we can rest a bit easier. This doesn’t mean there are not tasks we may have to do, but we will do it with love and strength.

Letting the Holy Spirit guide is letting the Light within you to be more than just a spark of inspiration.

We start off our journey of turning to our COMPASS, the Holy Spirit, by focusing our minds on being centered. We practice the willingness to turn to the Holy Spirit. That is our focus, getting centered and having the willingness to live a different life than we have. A life that is happy, peaceful and one of ease.

We celebrate it with each moment we listen to the Voice of Love over the Voice of fear.  Now is the time to accept Holy Spirit’s lead in your life.

Last week I started a new class called, “Let Him Lead the Way.” Students encouraged to read, to reflect, to journal, to meditate and to focus on the acceptance of Holy Spirt’s leadership and guidance in their lives. The results so far in the first week are nothing short of miraculous.

The class is offered as self-study now, and you can join in at any moment. In the class, you will receive exercises, practices, and meditations to assist you in allowing the Light in you to leap forward.

Access the class here and you will be on your way to a deeper connection with the Light within.

Our next topic in our Enhancing Your ACIM Practice  Class Series for this Thursday, August 10th, will be “Giving and Receiving Love.”

We learn in ACIM that giving and receiving are one in truth. It is for us to recognize as often as possible what we are “giving” to our brothers and sisters in the world.

In this week’s class, you will learn how you can be conscious and aware of the Love within you and how you can extend it to others.

You’ll have the opportunity to share with like-mind students who you will soon find are your mighty companions on this journey.

This Week: Trust

Our next topic in our Enhancing Your ACIM Practice  Class Series for this Thursday, August 3rd, will be “Trust.” Trust is the firm foundation as we learn in “The Characteristics of God’s Teachers” in the Manual for Teachers. Without trust, we continue along the ragged path of pain. Are you ready to live a life of clarity and happiness?

In this week’s class, you will learn how to deepen your trust as you call upon the strength within you given you by God. He has given you the gift of His Love and now He asks you to extend it to others.

You’ll have the opportunity to share with like-mind students who you will soon find are your mighty companions on this journey.

This Week: Staying Grounded in Truth

Our next topic in our Enhancing Your ACIM Practice  Class Series for this Thursday, July 20th, will be “Staying Grounded in Truth.” Great topic suggested by you, our students! Thank you for the suggestion. An important one at that in our A Course in Miracles practice!

In this week’s class, we’ll learn how to take responsibility of our mind and how we can strive to “not feed the fears” as the image states that I chose for this blog post. We can also learn how not judge ourselves when we slip up and become totally unearthed by a situation occuring in our lives. As students, we need not be swept up in the chaos of the hurricane swirling around our being.

I’ll share some of my personal examples and helpful practices we can use. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to share with like-mind students who you will soon find are your mighty companions on this journey.

See below to sign up for this week’s class and the other upcoming topics.
