The Healing Power of Kindness

By Ken Wapnick

Our Next Study for Our Study Groups

Our next series will start April 7th and we will be doing a book discussion with the book by Ken Wapnick, “The Healing Power of Kindness: Volume 1: Releasing Judgment.” This is an excellent addition to our “Being Truly Helpful” theme for this year. We will only be studying Volume 1. It is available in print and on Kindle on Amazon. It is also available as an audiobook on FACIM.org.

Description: The book from Ken Wapnick, “The Healing Power of Kindness, Pt. 1 – Releasing Judgments” is devoted to the kindness of healing, in hopes of reinforcing Jesus’ message of undoing separation. Kindness reflects our inherent oneness with each other, while attack drives us still further apart in our awareness. In reviewing the principles of sickness and healing and some common misapplications, the discussion in this book helps us undo the sources of unkindness, so that in all our interactions we would reflect the Source of kindness.

Weekly Study Group Focus:
  • Week 1: What thoughts arise when you look at the title’s words “The Healing Power of Kindness?” Read the Preface in study group and possibly begin “Section 1. The Kindness of Healing.”
  • Week 2: Discussion on group’s insights on “1. The Kindness of Healing” and “2. Judgment and the Belief in Differences: The Basis of Unkindness – How is Judgment Relinquished.”
  • Week 3: Discussion on group’s insights on section “Healing as the Undoing of Separation.”
  • Week 4: Discussion on group’s insights on “3. On Being a Teacher of Kindness.” Part 1 of discussion.
  • Week 5: Discussion on group’s insights on “3. On Being a Teacher of Kindness.” Part 2 of discussion.
  • Week 6: Conclusion with discussion on group’s insights on the Appendix.
How to Prepare and Read the Book:

Each day you will be reading from the book, “The Healing Power of Kindness. When you read, you will be doing more than just “reading.” I strongly encourage you to set aside the time to do so. Try not to read ahead. Take the reading as it is assigned.
Use the following format:
  • Prepare your space to read and journal. Be sure it is quiet. Make this a sacred time, light a candle or put on meditation music.
  • Before you begin reading, meditate for at least 5-10 minutes to clear your mind and so you may be open to the wisdom.
  • After meditation, open your journal and place the date and a 1-2 sentence intention to Holy Spirit.
  • Read a few paragraphs or a page. (Be sure to spread the reading out through the week, perhaps one page a day, etc). As you read, you may wish to jot down questions, make notes or observations.
  • Close the book. Take time to reflect on what you have read. As you journal, you may wish to reflect on how you could use what you are learning in your daily life. Or, what information in the reading made an impact. You may wish to refer to your ACIM book as well.
  • The essence of your daily journaling will be shared in our sharing in each week’s class. It is important that you are focusing on how to use the material in your life and not so much the reading was “nice”, “beautiful”, or “inspiring.” A Course in Miracles needs to be applied in every aspect of our lives to make an impact. Even 10 minutes of journaling can be powerful.

“Truly Helpful Prayer” Session 5 | Being Truly Helpful 2024 Series: A Course in Miracles

“Truly Helpful Prayer”

Teaching Session 5

Here’s a recap of our fifth and final teaching session, led by Rev. Deb, which focused on the final line in the Truly Helpful Prayer, “I will be healed as I let Him teach me to heal.”

Session Highlights:

  • Meditation: The session opened with a grounding meditation, focusing on contentment and presence. Participants were guided through mindfulness techniques and the affirmation “I am here, I am healed” is a powerful connector to the Holy Spirit.
  • Discussion on the “Truly Helpful” Prayer: We recapped the previous week’s readings and then the exploration centered around the fourth sentence of the Truly Helpful Prayer from “A Course in Miracles”: “I will be healed as I let Him teach me to heal.” This discussion highlighted the transformation involved in releasing the ego and embracing our shared identity, fostering a deep connection with the Divine. This path of healing encourages forgiveness, the relinquishment of judgment, and the recognition of our collective journey toward oneness.
  • Exploring the Prayer’s Fifth/Final Sentence: In allowing the Divine to teach us to heal, we open ourselves to our own healing. This line encapsulates the essence of the prayer – that in our willingness to be instruments of healing, we too are healed.
  • Reflection and Journaling Exercise: Participants were encouraged to reflect and journal about their experiences and feelings towards healing and being healed.
  • Reading Assignment: To prepare for our next session, we encourage you to read Chapter 28, VII. The Ark of Safety, Lesson 137 – When I am healed I am not healed alone. and Chapter 9, V. The Unhealed Healer.

Homework Assignments:

  • Reflection on the Final Sentence: Continue to ponder the fourth sentence of the prayer. Allow its meaning to resonate with you throughout the week.
  • Practice the “I am here” Meditation: Regularly engage in the meditation shared by Rev. Deb to enhance your presence and awareness.
  • The Optional Assignment: If you chose to work with the previous optional assignment, focusing on being helpful to someone in your life, consider what comes to you now as to what to say and what to do in this situation? Trust the direction from Holy Spirit.
  • Read: Gain further insights with the assigned readings, which will be the basis for our next week’s discussion with our facilitators.

This fourth teaching session helped us to deepen our understanding and experience of divine contentment and guidance. You are always welcome to join us.

First Series for 2024: “Truly Helpful Prayer”

Kickstarting Our ‘Truly Helpful’ Series

First Series: “Truly Helpful Prayer”

First Week Starts Sunday, January 7th and Wednesday, January 10th

We hope this message finds you well and filled with anticipation for our upcoming journey through ‘A Course in Miracles.’ As we gear up to embark on our first study series, “Being Truly Helpful,” We wanted to provide you with some insights and details to prepare you for what promises to be a transformative experience.

Overview of “Being Truly Helpful” Series: Our initial series will delve into the “Truly Helpful” prayer, a cornerstone of the teachings in ‘A Course in Miracles.’ This prayer, found on page 28 of the Text, is not just a set of words but a profound declaration of intent and purpose for anyone seeking to live a life aligned with spiritual principles.

In our exploration, we will:
  • Examine the prayer line by line, uncovering its deep meanings and implications.
  • Discuss how to apply these principles in our daily lives, turning theory into practical, lived experience.
  • Engage in guided meditations to internalize the message of the prayer, allowing it to resonate deeply within our hearts and minds.
Additionally:
  • You can join either our Sunday or Wednesday study groups, each will contain the same study each week. This first series will be about 10 weeks.
  • Some weeks will be teaching sessions; others will be group reading and study.
  • Be sure to have your ACIM book nearby and a journal or notebook available.
  • Teaching sessions with Rev. Deb will be recorded. Information and additional materials will be sent out each week in relation to the focus of study in this newsletter.
  • There is no requirement to attend each week. Do so as you are able.
  • Donate on the registration link with a monthly subscription or donate as you can.
  • Your donation is appreciated as we are an all-volunteer small ministry.

Why This Series Matters:

“Being Truly Helpful” is more than a theme; it’s a way of life. This series aims to cultivate a mindset and heartset that embodies the essence of being truly helpful – to ourselves, to others, and to the world. As we journey through this prayer, we’ll explore how its teachings can transform our perceptions, actions, and overall approach to life.

Your Participation:

Your insights, experiences, and reflections are crucial to the richness of our discussions. We encourage you to approach each session with an open heart and mind, ready to share and learn in equal measure. This is a journey we undertake together, supporting and inspiring one another along the way.

The Voice for God Brings Joy | Insights on A Course in Miracles

With God, all we do is create more love, because it’s perfect. And that’s the only because it’s perfect, there is no choice. That’s all there is to do.

In this new video, you will find excerpts from my sharing with those that gathered for our time together. You are always welcome to join us on any given Sunday.

Choose Joy, Not Pain | Insights on A Course in Miracles

At our Sunday Study Group, we shared on Text, Ch. 7, X. The Confusion of Pain and Joy and Lesson 190 – I choose the joy of God instead of pain.

In this new video, you will find excerpts from my sharing with those that gathered for our time together.

One of the things that I learned from the Holy Spirit, many years ago, and Jesus, is that you can go to them for advice, and they’ll give you advice, but they’re not going to force you to do anything you don’t want to do. They won’t force you to sacrifice, and they will always give you your options.

You are always welcome to join us on any given Sunday. Also to our Wednesday study group and our daily Workbook Lesson.

In Peace,

Rev. Paul

The Responsibility for Sight

At last Wednesday’s Study Group, Gayle and Mari were guided to share the reading in the Text, Chapter 21, II. The Responsibility for Sight. This proved helpful to those who attended.

There was a great podcast series on the “Responsibility for Sight” reading that Rev. Deb, Gayle and Mari did a few years ago. I’m sharing it with you below to help further round out your study of this reading. Take a listen!

The series is in five parts. See righthand corner to toggle.

Tips on the Rules for Decision | Insights on A Course in Miracles

This week with the Sunday Study Group, I was guided to share The Rules for Decision found in Chapter 30, Section I. After working with the Lessons last year, the Rules for Decision are a great next step to continue to develop that habit of going within of “Asking, Listening and Receiving.”

In this week’s video, you will find excerpts from my teaching to students in the January 15th Sunday study group. You are always welcome to join us on any given Sunday.

Cultivating the Relationship with Spirit, Pt. 2

This week we follow up with last week’s teaching with Part Two of “Cultivating the Relationship with Spirit” presented by Rev. Deb.

As ACIM says: If you would but let the Holy Spirit tell you of the Love of God for you, and the need your creations have to be with you forever, you would experience the attraction of the eternal. T-15.IX.5:1

In Part 2 of this 2 part series: Rev. Deb gives Daily Steps that you can use to continue to cultivate your relationship with the Holy Spirit. In this, we can let the Holy Spirit share with you how much you are cherished by God.

See video below.

ACIM Reading References for Teaching:

  • Text, Ch. 5, II. The Voice for God
  • Text, Ch. 14, VII. Sharing Perception with the Holy Spirit
  • Lesson 106 – Let me be still and listen to the truth.
  • Lesson 124 – Let me remember I am one with God.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this idea of cultivating our relationship with the Holy Spirit.

You can join in our study groups, or our email or Facebook groups.

What I Hear the Most

deer behind grass

What I hear the most from students over the last few decades of working in groups and individually with students is that they want to hear the Voice for God (or Holy Spirit or Jesus) speaking to them. This is the number one request of students besides any other topic related to A Course in Miracles.

Rev. Paul wanted the same when I first met him when he was a brand-new ACIM student and came to my study group in February 2003 when we were both still living in Pittsburgh.

We all start somewhere, and it is that desire to receive guidance and wisdom in our lives. I know that was true for me around 1990 or so, when I was a single parent, having a hard time in my life and was encouraged to read “A Return to Love” by Marianne Williamson by my therapist.

It opened my eyes, my heart and my mind. I had been meditating since 1980 and was drawn to Eastern philosophies and studies. I embraced ACIM wholeheartedly at the time. I already knew the power of silence and listening within but studying ACIM then helped me go a little deeper and truly pay attention to what love truly was and that I was in fact loved by God. Fittingly, I bought the actual ACIM book on Valentine’s Day.

As I shared with you earlier this week, the key to listening is cultivating the relationship with Holy Spirit. Just like any relationship there are times we speak and times we listen. All too often in relationships we have our agenda and speak incessantly rather than listening.

I hope with the tips that I give in this first part and what’s to come in part two that you will receive benefit in your relationship with Holy Spirit.

Blessings,

Rev. Deb
