Blocking the Voice

Excerpt from Change Your Mind! Talks on Living A Course in Miracles

As students of the Course, we want to be more vigilant so we can hear the Voice and not get sucked into our ego mind chatter. We want the comfort of knowing that we’re not alone. We want to be able to trust the Holy Spirit. We want to be able to tell the difference between the ego’s voice and the Voice for God. But you might wonder, as another of our class members did, “How can I trust what I hear is the Holy Spirit? I’m hearing something, but is it the Voice for God? How do I know?” Jesus gives us a litmus test: how do our thoughts make us feel? Do they make us feel fearful, angry, unworthy, little and vulnerable, guilty, anxious, worried, and ashamed? Do our thoughts lead to feelings of self-hatred, self-condemnation, self-abuse, and self-defeat? If that’s how we feel, then we know we’re listening to the nasty, vicious voice of the ego. You know that voice. I know it. We all know it too well! It’s the mean, critical, spiteful voice that yammers on and on in our minds by default. We’re so used to that voice that we think it’s normal; but it’s not.

How does the Holy Spirit’s voice make us feel? Peaceful, secure, safe, loved, loving, confident, calm, joyful. It’s a quiet Voice that speaks of love and welcome. It’s never negative. It never makes us feel bad about ourselves. It’s a benevolent Voice that consoles and comforts. It always brings peace. Something deep inside our minds knows that this Voice is trustworthy. So the test is: If we’re feeling bad, we’re listening to the ego; if we’re feeling peaceful, we’re listening to Holy Spirit. It’s that simple. Look to how we’re feeling, to our inner state. This is a course in mind training. We’re being trained to go within our minds and discern which voice we’re listening to.

Not a few of us are reluctant to announce that we “hear” a voice in our heads. “What if people think I’m hearing voices and think I’m crazy with some wacko mental problem?” or “I’ll be taken away in a straitjacket if I say that a voice tells me what to do and what to think!” Sure, that sounds crazy in the ego world – and I’m not suggesting that you tell non-Course people that you hear voices, please remember to be normal!

– but it’s all right there in Lesson 275: “Your healing Voice protects all things today, and so I leave all things to You. I need be anxious over nothing. For Your Voice will tell me what to do and where to go; to whom to speak and what to say to him, what thoughts to think, what words to give the world. The safety that I bring is given me. Father, Your Voice protects all things through me” (W-pII.275.2:1-5).

But the ego wants to block that Voice. The ego’s very existence depends on blocking Holy Spirit. The ego does that by telling us we can’t hear the Voice for God, that it’s crazy to think we can, and that it’s dangerous to even try.

Tired of listening to the ego’s voice?  See Chapter 1 in Rev. Deb Phelps’ book, Change Your Mind! Talks on Living A Course in Miracles to learn that you too can hear the Voice for Love anytime you desire to do so.

Since you’re here… …we have a small favor to ask. More people are reading our posts, listening to our audios and watching our videos than ever before but far fewer are donating for it. As an all-volunteer ministry, you can see why we need to ask for your help. MiraclesOne provides ACIM resources freely however it takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe in encouraging others to practically apply the Course principles in their lives – because it might just make the one difference in your life. If everyone who reads, listens or watches and likes what we offer helps to pay for it we can continue to afford our expenses and keep our resources FREE to all ACIM Students. Monthly Donors receive free gifts in appreciation for their support.
